Web Applications : is an application that is accessed with a Web browser over a network such as the Internet or an intranet . Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of the browser as a client , sometimes called a thin client . The ability to update and maintain Web applications without distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers is a key reason for their popularity. An emerging strategy for application software companies is to provide Web access to software previously distributed as local applications. Depending on the type of application, it may require the development of an entirely different browser-based interface, or merely adapting an existing application to use different presentation technology. These programs allow the user to pay a monthly or yearly fee for use of a software application without having to install it on a local hard drive

Distributed Systems:-
Distributed computing is a programming paradigm focusing on designing distributed, open, scalable , transparent , fault tolerant systems. This paradigm is a natural result of the use of computers to form networks. Distributed computing is decentralized and parallel computing , using two or more computers communicating over a network to accomplish a common objective or task. The types of hardware , programming languages , operating systems and other resources may vary drastically. It is similar to computer clustering with the main difference being a wide geographic dispersion of the resources.
Systems Integration: Building multi-platform software that integrates systems, applications, databases, web portals and processes. It automates and connects business
– 6 -processes all along the supply chain in manufacturing, distribution and other industries. It is a tool for systems integration, data management, data replication and synchronization.
service-oriented architecture(SOA): In computing , the term SOA expresses a perspective of software architecture that defines the use of loosely coupled software services to support the requirements of the business processes and software users. In an SOA environment, resources on a network are made available as independent services that can be accessed without knowledge of their underlying platform implementation. A service-oriented architecture is not tied to a specific technology. It may be implemented using a wide range of technologies, including REST , RPC , DCOM , CORBA or Web Services . SOA can be implemented without any of these protocols, and might, for example, use a file system mechanism to communicate data conforming to a defined interface specification between processes conforming to the SOA concept. The key is independent services with defined interfaces that can be called to perform their tasks in a standard way, without the service having pre-knowledge of the calling application, and without the application having or needing knowledge of how the service actually performs its tasks. SOA can also be regarded as a style of information systems architecture that enables the creation of applications that are built by combining loosely coupled and interoperable services[These services inter-operate based on a formal definition (or contract, e.g., WSDL ) that is independent of the underlying platform and programming language. The interface definition hides the implementation of the language-specific service. SOA based systems can therefore be independent of development technologies and platforms (such as Java , .NET etc). For example, services written in C# running on .Net platforms and services written in Java running on Java EE platforms can both be consumed by a common composite application. In addition, applications running on either platform can consume services running on the other as Web services, which facilitates reuse. SOA can support integration and consolidation activities within complex enterprise systems, but SOA does not specify or provide a methodology or framework for documenting capabilities or services. High-level languages such as BPEL and specifications such as WS-CDL and WS-Coordination extend the service concept further by providing a method of defining and supporting orchestration of fine grained services into coarser grained business services, which in turn can be incorporated into workflows and business processes implemented in composite applications or portals .
The Microsoft .NET Framework: is a software component that can be added to the Microsoft Windows operating system . It provides a large body of pre-coded solutions to common program requirements, and manages the execution of programs written specifically for the framework. The .NET Framework is a key Microsoft offering, and is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform. The pre-coded solutions in the namespaces form the framework’s class library and cover a large range of programming needs in areas including the user interface , data access , cryptography , web application development, numeric algorithms , and network communications . The functions of the class library are used by programmers who combine them with their own code to produce applications.
Programs written for the .NET Framework execute in a software environment that manages the program’s runtime requirements. This runtime environment , which is also a part of the .NET Framework, is known as the Common Language Runtime (CLR). The CLR provides the appearance of an application virtual machine , so that programmers need not consider the capabilities of the specific CPU that will execute the program. The CLR also provides other important services such as security mechanisms, memory management , and exception handling . The class library and the CLR together compose the .NET Framework. The framework is intended to make it easier to develop computer applications and to reduce the vulnerability of applications and computers to security threats. First released in 2002, it is
– 7 -included with Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista , and versions up to and including 2.0 can be installed on most older versions. The current version is 3.0, which was released in November 2006, and is supported on Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, and Windows Vista
